Beautiful, full and dry sparkling white wine. Light yellow with a small green tint. Exuberant scent, spicy, and fresh with hints of banana, melon, apricot and apple. Pizarras de Otero 2010, Bierzo
This wine comes from an 18th century estate which lay dormant for many years before being bought and revived by Bodegas Martín Códax in 2003. 'Pizarra' is the Spanish for slate, and here refers to the slate that characterises the rocky, mineral-rich soils of Bierzo.
2010 Vinho Verde, Adega de Moncao, Portugal
The Adega de Moncao lies virtually on the border with Spain in the far north of Portugal. The cooperative has just celebrated its 50th year and is a model of well organised, modern production. The wine is a 60/40 blend of Alvarinho (Albarino just over the border) and Trajadur. Fresh and fruity, and most of all a relaxing 11.5 degrees of alcohol. A perfect aperitif wine.

Condes de Albarei have produced Albarino that has secured an international demand (having 'been seen' in Madrid's Tapas Bars in the 90's.) Not unlike a Chablis in style it has a lively freshness and dry minerality with a creamy finish. The Albariño grape variety thrives on its cool coastal location and produces fresh elegant wines with a captivating floral bouquet and peach flavours. It is believed that Albariño is a distant relative to the Riesling grape with which it shares a fresh racy acidity.
