Heggies Chardonnay 2010, Eden Valley

Heggies Chardonnay 2010, Eden Valley
£14.99

One of Australia's highest altitude vineyard sites, Heggies vineyard has cool temperatures and rocky, well-drained soil. These provide the lean and environment necessary to stress and challenge the Chardonnay vines, resulting in low yields of quality berries with intense flavour. The grapes are hand-picked, then fermented and matured in a range of new and old French oak barriques for 11 months. The wine has fresh apple and pear flavours and a creamy nougat-like fullness.

Penfolds Magill Estate Shiraz 2008

Penfolds Magill Estate Shiraz 2008
£50.00

Located within Adelaide's city boundaries, Magill Estate is the place where Dr. Penfold originally settled in Australia, and remains one of the iconic South Australian vineyards. Almost the polar opposite of Grange, favouring elegance and finesse over raw power and concentration, Magill Estate's perfume and fragrance stands out. The 2006 is both restrained and opulent, elegant and complex and simply hedonistic. Fruit spices and mocha cherry on the nose with long, lingering flavours that caress rather than bludgeon the palate. A balance of spices, firm tannins and gorgeous ripe fruit will allow the wine to age for 10-15 years.

Jim Barry Shiraz 'The Armagh' 2006, Clare Valley, South Australia

Jim Barry Shiraz 'The Armagh' 2006, Clare Valley, South Australia
£90.00

Lying on a north-west-facing slope of the Clare Valley, Jim Barry's vineyard is a natural sun trap, providing superb ripening conditions for Shiraz. Dense and purple in colour, the wine has an abundance of blackberry and mulberry flavours, with notes of mint and eucalyptus adding tremendous complexity on the palate, leading to a long finish packed with cinnamon, star anise and hints of rosemary. Aged in French and American oak for 17 months, the wine is polished and generous in its youth, but will develop immeasurably given 10+ years in bottle.

HENSCHKE - Tappa Pass Shiraz 2004/05 75cl Bottle

HENSCHKE - Tappa Pass Shiraz 2004/05 75cl Bottle
£36.39

Very deep crimson in colour. The nose is concentrated and complex, with sweet lifted ripe aromas of spicy blackberries, blueberries and prunes, with hints of chocolate, anise and tar. The palate is sweet, ripe and lush, concentrated and complex, with intense blackberry fruits, plum, anise, cedar and tar. The texture is fleshy with silky layered tannins, excellent balance and great length. The average winter rainfall this season was a welcome relief after 2003's fourth-worst drought in history. A relatively frost-free, wet warm and thundery spring followed, creating a natural 'greenhouse' effect. The vines grew vigorously, flowered and in general set a large crop. December was the hottest for 10 years, however at the start of 2004 the weather became mild and windy and the vines thrived under virtually no heat stress. At the start of February searing heat caused sunburn and significant crop losses. Nnew records were broken with Ssouth Australia experiencing its hottest day ever. Fortunately March returned the region to glorious sunny days and cold dewy nights, with a couple of minor rain events, allowing the fruit to ripen under near perfect conditions. The vintage was almost as late as 2002 with good yields and excellent fruit quality. Matured in 55% new, 45% used French hogsheads for 18 months prior to blending and bottling. The Barossa has a core of grapegrowers of German-Lutheran descent dating back five generations, doggedly continuing the traditions of their forebears. Ooccasionally one or two parcels of fruit come over the weighbridge that just blow us away; this wine is one such example. The old, low-yielding vines are growing in devigorating Nneoproterozoic soils about 542 million years old, ranging from red-brown earths to terra rossa. The tiny-berried, fully mature black shiraz grapes were sourced from grower vineyards in Tappa Pass and Light Pass and were vinified in traditional open-top fermenters and then matured for two years in new and seasoned French oak barrels. A limited-production wine from vintages of superior to excellent quality only.

2009 Pinot Noir, Barwick Estate, Pemberton

2009 Pinot Noir, Barwick Estate, Pemberton
£10.99

Australia has a chequed history with Pinot Noir. Too often it's over cooked in the heat of the Australian vineyards, producing bland, unbalanced wines. However there are some glorious examples of excellent Pinot at very good prices. The Barwick Estate is one such wine. Fruit is sourced from the southerly tip of Western Australia, so it's one of the coolest of vineyard locations in the country. The Pemberton region is home to the Karri tree, and these giants create a magnificent back-drop to the vineyards at Barwick Estate. Nigel Ludlow is winemaker here and has an elegant touch when it comes to working with oak. The subtle use of French oak provides spice and leather notes to a palate of wild berries and plums. Full, ripe tannins enable this juicy wine to develop layers of complexity and a satisfying finish.

2007 Watervale Riesling, Mitchell Estate

2007 Watervale Riesling, Mitchell Estate
£11.50

We've been fans of this stellar Riesling for decades. Incisive and elegant, with freshly-cut grapefruit and lemon zest flavours, it's fantastically refreshing, and a favourite at Cellar and Kitchen Store tastings. Despite having so many contenders for Riesling supremacy in South Australia's Clare Valley (an area north of the Barossa Valley with slate as bedrock - just as in some top German vineyards) Jane and Andrew Mitchell effortlessly lead the pack vintage after vintage.

TYRRELLS - Double Barrel 24 Shiraz 2003/05 75cl Bottle

TYRRELLS - Double Barrel 24 Shiraz 2003/05 75cl Bottle
£34.58

The Tyrrell family are proud to release their new super Shiraz, DB24. This wine represents a new approach to red winemaking at Tyrrell's. The concept for DB24 was to create a contempory Shiraz that still maintains the Tyrrell stamp of finesse and elegance. Approximately 90% of the Shiraz grapes were sourced from McLaren Vale, and picked to have both the extract and fleshiness of fruit typical of the region. Approximately 10% of Heathcote Shiraz was blended back to the base wine to add structure and finesse. The double new oak maturation for 12 months each, is the derivation of the name DB24. The vintage was affected from drought conditions in the summer of 2003 which left crop levels down by as much as 50% in some instances. With the limited quantity, there was certainly no lack in quality with intense flavour and deep colour. Picking began on the 7th March, 20 days earlier than 2002. Fermented at the Hunter Valley headquarters in large potter tanks then transferred to new French oak. After 12 months the wine was then trasferred back into special new oak casks that were hand selected by Bruce Tyrrell from the Vicard Cooperage in Cognac. These barriques had profiled interior to increase the wood to wine ratio. The wine was bottled in May 2005. A modern style of Australian Shiraz that has harnessed the strengths of these two great wine regions. The Mclaren Vale gives the wine the extract and fleshiness for which it is renowned and the 10% Heathcote adds savoury undertones and gives the wine balance. The finish is long, and held together well by a thread of acidity. The lunar calendar illustrated on this label has been the vigneron's timepiece: signalling when to harvest, when to cellar and when to enjoy. This wine is matured for 12 months each in double new oak and is the derivation of the name Double Barrel 24. The concept for this wine was to create a contemporary Shiraz that still maintains the Tyrrell stamp of finesse and elegance. The grapes used for this wine come from McLaren Vale and Heathcote, two of the best Shiraz regions in the world.

Medium bodied with wonderful fresh acidity. The tradtional plum raspberry, and creamy cassis are indicative of the Shiaraz and Grenache. There is also a floral note and firmer textured finish courtesy of the Sangiovese in the blend. This is very much the 'modern' style of Australian Rose. It is savoury and dry rather than confectionary and sweet making it a genuine partner to a variety of different foods.
