Argentinian Wines
Lunta Malbec 2009/2010, Mendel Wines, Mendoza
Much of the fruit used in this wine comes from some of Argentina's oldest Malbec vines planted in 1928 in Luján de Cuyo. Winemaker Roberto de la Mota is one of the country's most respected, and has worked with several top producers of France and Argentina.
Torrontez, Famatina Valley, Bodegas Tapiz
Argentinian trophy winery Tapiz was bought by local sons of the soil the Ortiz family with a view to honestly expressing the challenging 'terroir' thereabouts. Namely, the Valle de Famatina, between 1000-1400m above sea level, in semi-desert with only 400mm rain per year. Using estate grown fruit and grapes from trusted neighbours, they create wines that resonate with the extremity of their origins.
2008 Sauvignon, Tapiz, Single Vineyard, Uco Valley, Mendoza
The Tapiz wines come from the Fincas Patagonicas, one of the most technologically advanced wineries in Argentina. Fincas Patagonicas vineyards are located in the Valle de Uco and Agrelo regions, province of Mendoza. Mt. Plata (6100 meters) and Tupungato volcano (6800 meters), overlook the state-of-the-art Fincas Patagónicas Winery providing magnificent scenery.
Familia Schroeder 'Saurus' Patagonia Select Sauvignon Blanc
Pale straw yellow colour, this wine is full of pink grapefruit and lime, backed by notes of peach and green grass. Hint of vanilla and caramel it is clean and fresh and has good balanced acidity.
The South American Sample Case, 12 Bottles, List 2011
Argentina and Chile continue to make their mark with their adopted, signature grape varieties, here represented by Carmenere, Malbec and Torrontez, with a couple of outlandish blends thrown into the mix for excellent good measure.
Las Moras Black Label Viognier
Viognier is a grape variety, which is enjoyed for its elegance and rich fruit characteristics. The grapes are grown here in the Tulum Valley, which is located at 650m of altitude. This particular Viognier is bursting with apricot and also offers exotic fruit and floral notes on the nose. On the palate, it develops beautifully with light citrus notes, grilled bread and an intense freshness. Finca Sophenia 'ES Vino' Cabernet Sauvignon
Deep red in colour with black fruit hues. Great aromatic intensity with blackcurrant, raspberry and interesting eucalyptus and mint hints. In the mouth, it shows firm and voluminous tannins of great balance and concentration.
2007 Crios de Susana Balbo, Rose of Malbec, Mendoza
Delicious rose from Argentina made from the Malbec grape variety.
2008 Chardonnay, Gouguenheim
This oak-aged Chardonnay is one of the finest we've tasted from Argentina, with buttery aromas, a touch of citrus, and elegant oak. We also think it's great with sesame chicken. Mendoza leading light Susana Balbo crafted it from the impeccable fruit of Patricio Gouguenheim's 'Valle Escondido' ('Hidden Valley') vineyards in high, cool Tupungato, where grape-growing conditions are just about perfect. Doubly-rewarding for her; she'd urged him to invest his inheritance there in the first
2005 Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot, Amauta, El Porvenir de Los Andes, Cafayate, Salta
Confined in the top north west corner of Argentina, the Salta region boast the highest vineyards in the world. The name Amauta harks back to the days when this was part of the Inca empire and means 'one who teaches how to live' !! This is a modern winery hidden behind an old fascade but the dedication to quality from vineyard to bottle is evident.
Wine - Gaucho
Spaniard José Manuel Fournier was attracted to Argentina by Mendoza’s proliferation of older vines including a high proportion of Tempranillo. The winery is situated in the now highly-fashionable Uco Valley in the south of Mendoza rising to 1400m above sea level beneath the snow-capped Andes. Winemaker José Spisso has played a masterstroke in combining the old-vine Tempranillo with high-altitude Malbec – a grape which the Uco Valley does as well as anywhere in the world – to produce some of South America’s greatest reds. The range stands out as ‘interesting’ wines with real character in stark contrast to a lot of the fruity mass-produced stuff on offer from much of the rest of Latin America.2008 Sauvignon BlancThanks to the high altitude at which these grapes are grown over 1000m this Sauvignon has steely lime and grapefruit flavours and a fresh zingy palate. Pure and refreshing.2008 MalbecA lovely example of Argentina’s trademark grape. Good concentration and structure intense plum and blackberry fruit tied up nicely with fresh acidity. Crying out for an Argentinian steak!

Las Moras Cabernet-Shiraz Reserva (Hand-harvested)
This wine is a wonderful example of a Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz blend. We immediately enjoyed its complex nose, which is reminiscent of Syrah from the Languedoc with spice and hints of mint. It is full-bodied with integrated tannins, and would go wonderfully with a fillet of beef. It was awarded 91 points in the Wine & Spirits magazine and was voted Best in Category at IWSC in London!More on the Bodega...Stunning, original and sublime - three words which summarise the success story of Las Moras. As highlighed by Guillermo Yaciofano, the work in the vineyard is crucial in determining the quality of the finished product. The work in the winery is a fusion of modern and traditional practice, and is a perfect reflection of a traditional Bodega and its current winemaker Rodolfo Opi Sadler. For Rodolfo, every stage of the winemaking process is a step towards creating greater customer satisfaction. His aim is for his customers to discover and understand that these wines are not only a true expression and representation of the unique terroir but also of the meticulous work carried out in the vineyard.AnecdoteEvery year since 1936, Mendoza organises a Harvest Festival with shows, concerts and tastings in the vineyard. 2007 Syrah, Bodegas Gouguenheim, Mendoza
An expensive-tasting Syrah that owes its chocolate-rich, plummy fruit to an impeccable upbringing in optimally-sited Argentinian vineyards. Funded by his Cognac-selling father, and steered by leading South American wine consultants Susana Balbo and Pedro Marchevsky, Patricio Gouguenhem put down roots in Tupungato's 'Valle Escondido' ('Hidden Valley'), an hour's drive from Mendoza.
